The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also known as the Hare Krishna movement, is a spiritual organization founded by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in July 1966 in New York City. Rooted in the Gaudiya-Vaishnava tradition, ISKCON promotes self-realization, devotion to God (Krishna), and a lifestyle based on the principles of Bhakti-yoga. ISKCON today includes over 400 temples, 40 rural communities, 100 vegetarian restaurants, and special projects like 'Food for Life', the world's largest free vegetarian food distribution program. ISKCON's teachings center around chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra and studying sacred texts like the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam.
